Our customers mould remediation request.
Our customer informed us that She was extremely sensitive to mould and wanted to be certain that the water affected space was completely free from any possible mould or moisture issues once the remediation works were completed. With this in mind our team put together a full scope of works that would be appropriate for this particular mould remediation and structural drying project.
Our team closely monitored the drying and remediation process and took both moisture readings and air quality readings throughout the entire remediation process.
The cause and location of the water damage.
The water damage was due to water and moisture escaping from the shower area in the main bathroom located next to the study. As a result of this the water had migrated through the grout in the shower tiles and from the base of the shower recess. The water was able to escape due to both the grout in the tiles and the silicon seal in the shower recess being in poor condition.
It is thought that the water had been escaping the shower area for quite some time and as a result it had migrated into the study area and into the family room behind the other side of the shower wall.
Our customer had already organised for the necessary bathroom repairs to eliminate the ongoing source of moisture ensuring the problem would not re-occur.
Our water damage remediation process.
- Containment – a zip wall containment was installed to stop the possible spread of any mould and to assist with the structural drying process.
- Strip out – The carpet and underlay was removed as per customers request, water affected skirtings in the study and family room were also removed.
- Hepa vacuuming – All water affected areas within the containment were thoroughly hepa vacuumed.

- Structural heat drying – Heat drying equipment was installed to correctly dry the masonry walls and concrete sub-floor.
- Remediation time frame- In total this job took 14 days to correctly remediate.
- Once the structural drying and mould remediation was completed, our team took a particle count reading of the air to confirm that our remediation process was successful and that this space was now completely mould free.

Drying water affected structures.
In some cases, it can take quite a while to correctly dry and remediate water damaged structure, especially if the affected materials have been getting wet over an extended period. Heat drying is in most cases the most effective process for drying and remediating structural materials, when implemented correctly heat drying will rapidly increase the evaporation rate of the water affected structure encouraging the moisture to be released from the wet materials.
Structural materials with lower porosity are typically more difficult to dry as the moisture can become bound within these materials, such materials can include.
- Concrete
- Timber frames
- Brick and masonry
- Cement render
Remediating mould in a wet structure
The two almost always go hand in hand as mould is always initiated by some form of moisture to begin its growth. Therefore, once the mould has been professionally remediated the structural drying process will need to be implemented to prevent the mould growth from returning. Typically it is best to remediate the mould before starting the structural drying process.
