Mould cleaning in the bathroom.

Mould prevention.

As with most things prevention is often the best cure. If you can limit the amount of mould in your bathroom then you will not only limit the amount of cleaning required, but you will also limit your exposure to the hazardous mould itself. Keeping your bathroom as mould free as possible to begin with makes good sense. Below are a few tips for limiting or preventing mould growth in your bathroom.

  1. Keep your bathroom well ventilated, especially when using the shower or bathtub. Ensure your exhaust fan is sufficient to remove the wet air from the space, open up doors and windows immediately after using the bathroom for additional ventilation.
  2. Wipe down walls and ceilings with a microfibre cloth after use if there is moisture present on these surfaces.
  3. Ensure that the silicon seal around the shower recess and at the base of all bathroom tiles is in good condition.
  4. Check that the grouting in all wall and floor tiles is intact and in good condition.
  5. Have the grout sealed with a penetrating sealer of reduce moisture ingress.
  6. Never leave wet towels on towel racks inside the bathroom, air dry towels outside on the clothesline after use.
  7. Attend to any leaking taps or water drips straight away as moisture levels will soon build up from these water leaks.
  8. Keep a close eye on all surfaces and if you notice any signs of mould quickly clean it with an appropriate cleaning agent straight away.
  9. Maintain a regular cleaning routine for your bathroom, never let dirt, dust or soap scum build up as this will encourage mould growth.
  10. Place a couple of moisture absorbent packs on the window ledge or on top of the cabinetry to reduce moisture levels.

Keeping your bathroom moisture free.

As we can see from the tips above, maintaining good ventilation and reducing moisture levels in the bathroom is a good way to keep the bathroom mould free. This is vital as increased moisture levels will encourage rapid mould growth.

Water leaks of any kind must also be addressed straight away. Keep in mind that water leaks inside wall cavities in bathrooms is common therefore we recommend regular inspections by a qualified plumber for pressure testing and visual inspections to ensure there are no water leak issues.

A tap washer, a breach piece or a pipe that is slowly leaking inside the wall cavity of your bathroom can have devastating consequences. Undetected leaks such as these can continue un-noticed for a very long time creating the perfect environment within your home for rapid and extensive mould growth. It is important to be diligent when it comes to water leaks and moisture in the bathroom area.

Moisture is the main ingredient for mould growth, without moisture mould can’t survive!

Keeping tiles, grout and silicon sealers in good condition to maintain waterproofing.

  • Tiles and grout – ensure your tiles and the grout are in perfect condition, if not water can penetrate through and into the walls of the bathroom. Once this happens mould will almost certainly start to growth inside the wall cavities where you can’t see it, this will result in rapid and extensive mould growth.
  • Sealing the grout – by sealing the grout you will be adding an additional layer of protecting to stop any water ingress beyond the wall tiles, this is highly recommended.
  • Tiles – carefully inspect all tiles and make sure they are in good condition, free from any chips or cracks and that they are well secured to the wall.
  • Silicon seal – this is a bead of silicon that runs along the bottom edge between the wall tile and the floor tile to seal this area and stop any moisture from penetrating the tiles.
  • This must be regularly maintained and re-applied as required to ensure a tight and efficient seal between the tiles.

Regular plumbing inspections.

There is a lot riding on the overall condition of the plumbing in not only your bathroom, but your entire house. We highly recommend a yearly plumbing inspection to test for any hidden water leaks inside wall cavities etc and to also be proactive and identify and rectify any potential future water issues.

Another issue that can account for water leaks and burst pipes is the water pressure that is coming into your home, this can fluctuate, and you may need this adjusted, or you may need a pressure reducer installed by a qualified plumber. Overly high water pressures can cause water leaks and even burst pipes within the home.

Routine cleaning to avoid mould growth.

Dirt, dust, grime and moisture are all food sources for mould, if you can keep your bathroom clean and moisture free then you will significantly reduce the risk of unwanted mould growth. The key to cleaning the bathroom is to be regular and consistent, this way you will not have to use any harsh chemicals for your cleaning.

Always be sure to go over any areas in the bathroom that you have cleaned with a dry microfibre cloth as your final cleaning process, this way you will be removing any moisture left behind from the cleaning process.

Be proactive and if there is any signs of even the smallest amount of visible mould clean it up straight away. Always stay on top of any signs of mould in the bathroom.

If i do have mould, what should I clean it with?

With mould cleaning we always recommend starting slowly, the first step in mould removal should be vacuuming, however you will need to make sure you have an appropriate hepa grade vacuum cleaning before vacuuming any mould.

Clean with a surfactant cleaner which would be diluted dishwashing liquid or even an orange based general spray and wipe cleaning agent, this is often sufficient for a small area of minor mould growth.

We would recommend following this up, if required with an anti-bacterial treatment such as Biosan or Benefect simply apply to a microfibre cloth and damp wipe as required.

The secret to mould cleaning is to act fast, never let the mould build-up and get out of control. If your mould contamination is severe then your will need to call in a professional mould remediation company.
