Why a detailed water damage assessment matters
Our team will locate and assess the full extent of the water damage and document the damaged materials and content items. They will inspect and identify the category and class of the water damage, and any potential issues or safety concerns will be noted. We will then formulate a plan of action that best suits the requirements of your specific job. Our team member will discuss the extent of the water damage and communicate with you throughout the entire process.
Thermal imaging to locate hidden moisture
While some water damage may be obvious and visible to the naked eye, often the moisture is not visible and can be trapped inside wall cavities, ceiling spaces, and underneath cabinetry. Our team, equipped with the latest thermal imaging technology, will use this advanced tool to moisture map your water-affected property and locate every drop of moisture. This use of advanced technology instils confidence in our ability to thoroughly assess and treat the water damage.
Measuring moisture levels for effective restoration
Now that we have identified exactly where the moisture is located, including all the trapped moisture in walls and ceilings, we can use our state-of-the-art moisture reading instruments to confirm how high the moisture readings are in each property area. We will then document these moisture levels and use this as a benchmark to gauge how well the materials are drying throughout the drying process. Our team will also take relative humidity and temperature readings, which will be monitored throughout the drying process.

Assessing the type of water damage for safe restoration
Categories of water damage (1, 2, 3)
One of the critical components of a thorough water damage assessment is determining the type of water involved. Flood Fixers classifies water damage into three main categories:
Category 1 (clean water)
Water is determined to have originated from a clean, sanitary source and will not cause harm to people. This can be burst water pipes, overflowing sinks and bathtubs with clean water, washing machine and dish washer inlet hoses etc. At Flood Fixers Adelaide, our team, with their extensive knowledge and experience, are fully qualified to determine all types of water loss.
Category 2 (grey water)
This is water that is considered to carry a significant amount of contamination. It could possibly cause illness to people if ingested and carries with it a degree of biological nutrients which can increase the risk of microbial growth. Category 2 examples can include, washing machine and dishwasher outlet hoses, leaking water beds, toilet bowls with urine only, water seepage due to hydrostatic pressure. Understanding these risks is crucial for safe restoration.
Category 3 (black water)
Category 3 water is grossly unsanitary and contains pathogens that can cause serious harm to humans. Examples include sewage water backflow from drains and pipes, flood waters, water from rising creeks, and water that has entered the property from outside.
Assessing water damage classes
Classes of water damage (1, 2, 3, 4)
Correctly identifying the class of water damage is crucial in determining the humidification capacity required to remove the moisture in the air during the drying process. Once we have established the class of water damage, we can use this to calculate the amount of dehumidification, airflow, and heat required to evaporate the moisture out of the wet materials within the water-affected property.
We use four main classes of water damage:
Class 1 water damage
Minimal water absorption, affecting only part of a room or area. It involves little or no wet carpet or flooring, and a limited amount of water has seeped into materials.
Class 2 water damage
Water affects the entire room or area, significantly absorbing carpets, walls, and furniture. Dehumidification and air circulation are essential to dry the materials thoroughly.
Class 3 water damage
The highest absorption level is where water saturates walls, ceilings, floors, and even subfloors. Restoring the property requires extensive drying equipment and time.
Class 4 water damage
Water has penetrated deeply into materials like hardwood floors, plaster, or brick. Specialised drying methods are needed to remove moisture from these dense materials.
